Program Offerings

The YMCA of Metropolitan Huntsville offers a wide array of programs and services to our members and the community at large. Many of the programs offered are included in your membership rates. Our program offerings include programs for children of pre-school, youth, and teen age as well as adults and seniors. We offer programs for families and individuals as well. All program content that focuses on accomplishing our mission and teaching values such as caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

AQUATICS YMCA Pools

With a focus on providing a safe environment YMCA Learn to Swim programs provide a level of aquatic safety as well as skill development. Programs follow the nationally recognized YMCA of the USA Aquatic guidelines and curriculum.

Parent/Child Level
  • Skip - Parent/ child class designed for children ages 6 months to 3 years old. Students must be accompanied by adult. This class will allow children to adjust to the water through group interaction, songs and games.
Pre School Levels (Ages 3-5 ½ years)
  • Pike - Beginner level for this age group. Classes will work on water adjustment, floating, kicking and swimming on both the front and back. Child must be able to swim 5 feet on front and back without floatation device before progressing to Eel.
  • Eel - This level will focus on increased independence. Participants will work on front, back and side paddle, jumping in pool without assistance, PFD’s and safety skills. Child must be able to swim 15 feet on front and back without floatation device before progressing to Ray.
  • Ray - In this level, participants will begin working on side breathing, while continuing to focus on front, back and side paddle. They will also learn about diving safety, floating and treading water. This class will meet in both the therapy pool and the large pool. Child must be able to swim 20 feet on both front and back without the aid of floatation devices before progressing to Starfish.
  • Starfish - The starfish level encourages participants to continue to work on strokes while increasing endurance. The student must be able to swim 40 feet without floatation device before progressing to the next level. In order to prepare your child for the youth levels of the YMCA program, this class will meet in both the therapy pool and the large pool.
Youth Levels (Ages 6 and up)
  • Polliwog - Beginner level for this age group. Participants will work on floating, kicking and paddling on the front, back and side. Must be able to swim 20 feet without floatation device before progressing to the Guppy level.
  • Guppy - Students will continue to work on front, back and side paddle. In addition to these strokes, they will also learn floating, treading water, diving safety rules and side breathing. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards (one length of the pool) on front, back and side before moving on to the Minnow level.
  • Minnow - In this level students will begin learning breaststroke, sidestroke and backstroke. They also learn many safety skills including treading water and swimming with a PFD. Participant must be able to swim 25 yards of rudimentary front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and elementary back stroke before progressing into the Fish level.
  • Fish - Participants will continue to work on all strokes, focusing on refinement and endurance. The butterfly stroke and open turns will also be introduced in this level. Must be able to swim 50 yards of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and elementary backstroke before moving into the Flying Fish level.
  • Flying Fish - In this level participants will focus on personal safety, along with improving skills and endurance. Students must be able to swim 15 yards of butterfly and 100 yards of front crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl, and side stroke before progressing into the Shark level.
  • Shark - The shark level teaches students about personal safety, rescue skills and water sports and games. New strokes introduced include over arm sidestroke and the trudgen crawl. Participants must be able to swim a 200 yard individual medley along with 50 yards of over arm sidestroke and the trudgen crawl.
OTHER AQUATIC PROGRAMS TO CHECK OUT:
  • Water Exercise - includes various programs such as Aqua Jog, Arthritis Exercise, Head 2 Toe, and Aquacise.
  • Swim Team - for children ages 4 years and up. A year around competitive program that includes participation in the summer swim league as well as competition during the non-summer months. Practices are held at the YMCA on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30pm - 7:00pm and on Saturdays from 8:00am - 9:15am.
Parent/Child and Pre-school program fees are $25.00 for members and $50 for program participants. Sessions are usually 2 times per week for 4 weeks..

Youth Learn to Swim and Adult Learn to Swim program fees are $30.00 for members and $60.00 for program participants. Sessions are usually 2 times per week for 4 weeks.

Water Exercise programs are included in the YMCA membership fee.

Swim Team fees are $50.00 per season for members and $100.00 per season for program participants.

YOUTH SPORTS Youth Sports

The YMCA is known nationally for its youth sports programs, which promote the YMCA core character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Furthermore, it teaches kids the importance of fair play, and provides skill development and play preparation. After all, the key word here is play. Volunteers donate their time and energy to help your child develop and grow in the sport or sports of their interest. Volunteers are always needed. Sports Schedules:

··         Basketball: Bitty Ball (3 and 4 year olds) Youth (5 – 10 year olds): Registration: October  – November, Practice begins in November.   The Basketball goals are raised/lowered for every age group to a different height in order to accommodate their needs at that respective age.

·         Baseball:  Registration:  March, Practices Begin in April – Leagues offered:  Tee-Ball and Coach Pitch – These leagues are designed to emphasize skills and fun for all participants.

ADULT SPORTS

To meet the requests of our adult members, the YMCA will offer adult sports programs for fun, fellowship and a little friendly competition.

  • Basketball – Adult League for ages 18 & up. Season January – March consisting of 9 or 10 games and single elimination tournament. Games played Mon., Tues. and Thrus. Nights. Registration December and early January. Coaches meeting in January TBA. Score Keeper, Officials and season Trophy (team with best league standing and tournament winners) provided by the YMCA. Uniforms provided by each individual team.

FITNESSYMCA Fitness

The purpose of the YMCA is to build strong kids, strong families, strong communities. The YMCA has been providing quality state of the art fitness programs for over 150 years and is a national leader in the field. All instructors are trained and certified in aerobics, personal training, strength training, CPR and first aid or a combination of the same.

The YMCA is proud to provide the Fit Linxx computerized training program along with state of the art Life Fitness selectorized weight equipment and cardio equipment and Hammer Strength plate loading and free weight equipment. Personal trainers are on staff and will set you up and guide you through the workout of your choice whether it be strength development, weight loss, toning or maintaining.

As well the YMCA offers a variety of exercise classes free to members: Awesome Abs, Back to Basics, Beginning Pilates, Cardio Combo, Gentle Yoga, Hi/Lo Aerobics, Kickbox Aerobics, Pilates, Resist-A-Ball, Senior Fit, Slimnastics, Indoor Cycling, Step, Step Interval, Total Toning, and Yoga.

Our trained staff also offer some specialty classes and personal training programs that may carry an additional fee: Women on Weights, Teen Fitness, Y-Weight and One on One Personal Training Sessions.
