Living Well on the Lake

News | Mary Anne Swanstrom | August 29, 2018

Summer camp might seem an unusual place for cancer patients to seek out healing, but the serene, intimate setting of YMCA Camp Cha-La-Kee on Lake Guntersville provided the perfect space to explore joy, gratitude and new friendships at the first YMCA Connect-Recharge-Thrive Wellness Retreat.

Thanks to a grant from Alliance Cancer Care, 21 women were able to participate in the three-day camp stay. Activities were plentiful and included pottery and painting; exercise classes in yoga, balance and flexibility; healthy cooking sessions; and playtime whether kayaking, on the exhilarating giant swing or touring Lake Guntersville by pontoon boat. The Y plans to repeat the retreat in 2019. For information, contact Terri Keller, YMCA Health Initiatives Coordinator, at or 256.428.9622 ext. 3011.
