Kids in Power Scholars Academy Beat Summer Learning Loss

The week after school closed for the summer, more than 400 children came back for a daily booster of math and reading skills at Power Scholars Academy. The Heart of the Valley YMCA launched the summer learning loss prevention initiative in 2016 with one site and 80 children. The program has expanded to five sites in 2018: New Hope Elementary, Madison County Elementary, Owens Cross Roads Elementary, Madison Elementary and Guntersville Middle School. Our program was named in the top five in the nation among 53 YMCAs offering Power Scholars Academy. PSA is a collaboration between the Heart of the Valley YMCA, the schools, The C.A.R.E. Center, BELL University and 21st Century Community Learning Center, which provides funding along with the YMCA.
