Your workout, your way! Yoga, pilates, zumba, and many more workout classes are provided at each of the YMCA branches. Group Exercise Class Descriptions
Below is a sampling of classes offered at Southeast Family Y, Hogan Family Y or Downtown Express Y. All classes are not offered at all branches, so check the current schedules for availability.
This class has something for everyone with the activity changing every 20 minutes. Participate in aerobics, circuits, step, kickboxing, toning and lots more. Classes vary, but participants are guaranteed a great workout.
30-Minute Express Workout
This half-hour workout incorporates cardiovascular training and resistance training to provide an efficient workout. You will be back in the office feeling great within an hour.
This 10-15 minute class focuses on strengthening the abs, core and lower back. All fitness levels benefit and work towards improving abdominal strength. The Ab Attack is the perfect class to tag on at the end of a workout.
Advanced to Intermediate Pilates
Advanced to Intermediate level Pilates class is a dynamic, full-body workout focusing on improving flexibility, core strength and toning all muscle groups.
This 15 minute class focuses on strengthening and slimming the core. Tag on as an abdominal workout after cardio or when you’re crunched for time.
This class focuses on creating strong and toned arms and legs.
This is an instructional class for beginners. Breathing, core development and strength, postural alignment and the fundamentals of Pilates movement and exercise will be the focus. (Class is limited to first 24 participants)
Belly Dance Blast
A total body workout with exciting music burns calories and connects the body with the spirit in a fun, encouraging atmosphere. Belly Dance Blast incorporates yoga warm-ups and cool-downs for lengthening and stretching as well as fun combinations of belly dance movement from both Egyptian belly dance and tribal fusion.
BodyAttack™ (LES MILLS™)
BodyAttack is the sports-inspired cardio workout for building strength and stamina. This high-energy interval training class combines athletic aerobic movements with strength and stabilization exercises. Dynamic instructors and powerful music motivate everyone towards their fitness goals – from the weekend athlete to the hard-core competitor! Like all the LES MILLS™ programs, a new BODYATTACK™ class is released every three months with new music and choreography. Team teaches will be once every three months with the launch of new choreography/ music. All instructors will team teach a track on the new release.
BodyPump™ (LES MILLS™)
Les Mills BodyPump is the original barbell class that strengthens the entire body. This 60-minute workout challenges all major muscle groups by using the best weight room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. Great music, awesome instructors and your choice of weight inspire you to get the results you came for--fast. Like all the LES MILLS™ programs, a new BODYPUMP™ class is released every three months with new music and choreography. Burn up to 600 calories per class. Team teaches will be once every three months with the launch of new choreography/ music. All instructors team teach a track on the new release.
Tone and shape the body for one hour.
Cardio Happy Hour
Instructors will incorporate a variety of aerobic activities in this one-hour class including step, cardio kickboxing and cardio ball. This class is guaranteed to pump up your heart rate while providing a little something for everyone.
Country Line Dancing
Yee-Hah! Aerobic exercise is more fun with this workout using the elements of country-western line dancing to burn fat and build muscle. This class includes the “must know” classics such as the “Electric Slide” and “The Cowboy Boogie.”
Dance Dance Revolution (DDR)/Wii Just Dance 2
Especially designed for 9- to 18- year-olds, this class uses popular games that get kids up and moving. Parents can attend, too! Participants will stand on a dance platform and step on colored arrows with their feet to musical and visual cues led by a fitness instructor. We will also have the Wii available for those who would like to try their skills out with the Just Dance 2 game. This fun workout happens in the multipurpose room.
Flex & Stretch
Work all muscle groups in this class that focuses on toning, stretching and flexibility. Increase the feeling of well-being while protecting the back and joints. Each session ends with 20 minutes of complete relaxation.
Improve muscle tone, balance, flexibility and strength while focusing on stretching, breathing and mindful awareness.
Hip Hop Hustle
Ready to run it up a notch with ultra-cool moves that will have everyone dancing like there is no tomorrow? It’s a “no dance experience required,” pre-designed hip-hop class that’s easy to follow.
Add a totally new element to your workout. Kick, punch and sweat your way into a totally new fitness level.
This is a high energy class for kids. Enjoy fun filled activity that is guaranteed to keep you moving. (Last 15 minutes of class will be held on the track)
An innovative flexibility and strength class focusing on core muscle strength and body conditioning. Class is limited to first 24 participants.
A high intensity class filled with strength training, plyometrics, and speed drills etc. Take your workout and your body to a whole new level. This is an athletic class!
A 45 minute class, designed to challenge the experienced cyclist across a variety of drills.
Presidential Kid Fit
This class will focus on certain aspects of the presidential fitness test including flexibility, strength, endurance, etc. Get your kids moving in this new class. Ages 5 and up please!
Resist-A-Ball Boot Camp
Stability and strength exercises on the ball as well as aerobic training.
This class is for seniors or anyone new to fitness. This class combines muscle toning, stretching, low impact cardio dance using a ball, core exercise and balance training. Focus is on fun and fellowship.
This is an exciting class using stationary bikes. Break a sweat and become part of the cycling addiction. Please bring a hand towel and water! (This class is limited to first 24 participants)
A cardiovascular exercise class executed on a 4” bench. Choreography and STEP patterns will vary from class to class. It’s a great workout! tone those muscles-all in one hour!
Step & Sculpt
This class combines two all-time favorites. This class alternates five minutes of fat-burning step with two minutes of toning and strengthening exercises to give you the best of both worlds. Burn fat and tone those muscles-all in one hour!
Become healthier, stronger, more flexible and balanced while practicing the graceful movements of T’ai Chi. Instruction in the Style beginning with a simple introduction to the Solo Forms and moving on to the 24 step Short Form. Advisable for any age and body type; especially recommended for seniors to improve muscle strength and balance.
Total Toning – A great total body workout! Hand weights, bands, and balls will help you tone, increase strength, and flexibility.
This is the ultimate cardiovascular challenge complete with a sport specific warm-up, bouts of intense intervals, easy to follow combinations, kickboxing specific strength/endurance training and a Tai-Chi like cool-down. This class is sure to make you sweat!
Busy day at work or just need to relax! Yoga improves muscle tone, increases flexibility and reduces daily stress. (Class is limited to the first 24 participants.)
Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic workout system that will blow you away. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got ZUMBA!
Zumba for Kids
Zumba for kids combines Latin music with dance movements to create a festive atmosphere where kids can have fun dancing and exercising, all at the same time. Kids will learn the basic steps to the salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton, hip-hop and more! Songs are tailored to children.
